Introduction to waterslide transfers

Waterslide transfers are traditionally used in the labeling or decoration of ceramic, china or porcelain products producing a fine and sharp, high-quality print. It is normally applied directly using a film of water activated adhesive and henceforth, brought to a firing stage subjecting both the product and the transfers to an extremely high temperature (often exceeding 200 C) for a short duration of time. As the ink that is used in the transfers is essentially fine colored ceramic powder, the label would literally bond on to the host product on a microscopic level and thus creating a very strong print.

With the advent of stronger and more surface-specific glue, waterslide transfers now have a wider range of application surfaces such as metal, plastic and wood as well. However, application of a layer of lacquer either by spraying or painting on the print is highly recommended to improve the durability of the print.

        Product Guidelines

1. 2. 3. 4.
  • Dip transfer paper (the print completely) in lukewarm water for about 45 seconds (depending on the size of the print).

  • Remove the paper from the water and clean thoroughly the desired surface of product that requires the label or print into the smooth clean surface.

  • Gently place the transfer 'face-up' on the surface of application and while holding the paper on one hand, slowly shear (i.e. push sideways) the print directly onto the surface of the product, pulling the paper away. If the print does not slide easily, dip the paper once more in water as in (1).

  • Ensure there are no air bubbles between the layer of print and the product surface and lightly dry the print of any residual water droplets.

  • Leave to sry for a few hours in dry conditions.

  • Once dried, for ceramic, porcelain or stainless steel products, firing must be undertaken to bond the ink of the print onto the host material (Please consult with us for appropriate temperature and duration of firing needs for your particular product material).

  • Otherwise, for other products (e.g. plastics, glass or pewter), it is necessary to apply a coating of transparent lacquer by spraying on it to ensure durability of the print.
